ROUTES - BY CAR

We are aware how confusing many directions given by Schools can be. We hope that we can give you the best advice, and assume that you have a normal road map to assist you!

Even where the directions may appear unusual, it is our experience that the routes we have chosen are the quickest, in some case by far, in that they are designed to maximise use of dual-carriageway and by-pass most towns.

All the routes below lead you into Uppingham, and to High Street West, which because of the one-way system, is the only approach to the main School buildings. You will then find the School Tower. If you are coming on a Visiting Day, drive in under the Tower and park: the reception area and the Headmaster's Office are straight ahead of you across the quadrangle as you drive in.

From the North heading South on the A1 Leave the A1 at the B668 exit, signed to Oakham: follow the signs for Oakham, and in the town turn left onto the A6003 for Uppingham. After six miles, go over the roundabout and into Uppingham (1/4 mile), over the lights, and then turn right in 75 yards into High Street West. The School Tower is about 200 yards up on your left.

From the North heading South on the M1

Come off the M1 at Junction 22 (Markfield). Pick up the A50 to Leicester as far as the Outer Ring-Road, shortly after you have passed County Hall at Glenfield on your left. Turn left at the big roundabout (you will see a big Hospital on your immediate left), and take the Outer Ring-Road following the signs for the A47 (Peterborough). Eventually you will come to a large crossing with traffic-lights where you should turn left towards Peterborough. Follow the A47 for 16 miles, then turn right at the roundabout (Uppingham ¼ mile), cross the lights, and in 75 yards turn right up High Street West. The School Tower is about 200 yards up on your left.

From the North West

The A50, which is now a dual carriageway all the way, meets the M6 at Junction 15 near Stoke, and takes you all the way to the M1 (junction 24), where you should join the motorway for a short while coming off at junction 22 (Markfield).

From the South and South East heading North on the A1 or M11

Now that the A1(M) is open North of Huntingdon, we would not advise the A14 to Kettering, but suggest you use the A1. So use the A1 all the way to the A47, or if you are using the M11, you will find it becomes the A14 at Cambridge, and then follow signs for A1 North. You actually join the A1 north of Huntingdon. Leave the A1 after about 18 miles at the A47 junction, signposted Leicester. In 14 miles at the roundabout just outside Uppingham, turn left to Uppingham (Uppingham ¼ mile), and proceed over the traffic lights, and in 75 yards turn right up High Street West and the School Tower is about 200 yards up on your left.

From the West Midlands, Birmingham and the South West

The best way for most people is to aim for the M42 Birmingham ring-road, and then the M6 southbound towards London. This may seem strange, but persevere. Take the M6, do NOT leave at the M69 junction, but proceed a few more miles and take the A14 turn-off to Kettering. 20 miles further on, take the Kettering exit from the A14, and then follow signs for Stamford and Corby, until you turn left at the roundabout (at which the A43 for Stamford goes straight ahead) onto the A6003 to Corby, Oakham and Uppingham. In 14 miles turn left at the top of the hill just after the pedestrian lights in the town of Uppingham, and the School Tower is 200 yards up on your left.

From the South travelling North on the M1

Leave the M1 at the Northampton South exit (Junction 15, A508), and follow the Northampton ring-road until the exit for Kettering (A43). Follow signs for Kettering, and at the Kettering ring-road take the signs for Corby (A43) and Stamford: then at a roundabout where the A43 goes straight on to Stamford, turn left onto the A6003 to Corby, Oakham and Uppingham. In 14 miles turn left at the top of the hill just after the pedestrian lights in the town of Uppingham, and the School Tower is 200 yards up on your left.

From the East Anglia (South)

Use the A14, then the A1 all the way to the A47, or if you are using the M11, you will find it becomes the A14 at Cambridge, and then follow signs for A1 Peterborough. You actually join the A1 north of Huntingdon. Leave the A1 after about 18 miles at the A47 junction, and follow the signs for Leicester. In 14 miles at the roundabout just outside Uppingham, turn left into Uppingham, and proceed over the traffic lights, and in 75 yards turn right up High Street West and the School Tower is about 200 yards up on your left.

From East Anglia (North)

Use the A47, and follow it round the Peterborough by-pass, signposted for Leicester. Then when you reach the Uppingham roundabout (on the A47 itself) turn left into Uppingham, and proceed over the traffic lights, and in 75 yards turn right up High Street West and the School Tower is about 200 yards up on your left.

ROUTES - BY TRAIN

Uppingham School is served by Kettering, Oakham, Peterborough and Leicester train stations.

Journey time from London (King's Cross) to Peterborough is approximately 50 minutes and from London (St Pancras) to Kettering, approximately 55 minutes. From Peterborough station it takes approximately 30 minutes to Uppingham by car and Kettering Station approximately 20 minutes.

ROUTES - BY AIR

The nearest airports to the School are Stansted, Luton, Birmingham and East Midlands.

Having arrived at East Midlands airport the journey time to Uppingham by car is approximately 1 hour, from Birmingham and Stansted approximately 1¼ hours, from Luton 1½ hours and from London Heathrow approximately 2 hours. Please note that there is also a rail connection to Kettering from London Gatwick via Thameslink trains.
